Indoor or beach
Indoor volleyball needs a marked court and a net, bookable by the hour in a hall. Beach volleyball is played two-a-side on sand, typically from April to October, at several sports complexes and recreation parks. Some sand courts are covered with a tent in winter.
Team and league
Clubs run adult and youth teams with a coach and league play. Amateurs can join several mixed leagues and corporate championships - these generally need a ready-made team, but open training sessions are a good way to meet people.
Getting started
Volleyball is technical (forearm and overhead passing, serving), so starting with group coaching helps. The beach version is less technique-heavy to pick up and makes a great summer social activity.
