The Foundation "Alliance for the Nation" purchased the property at VIII. district, Visi Imre u. 6 in 2002 for approximately 100 million forints from donations and the shared values of like-minded people. The 1,600 square meter building was constructed in the 1930s and housed a picture frame factory for an extended period. Renovation work on the three-story residential building began in November 2003 and was completed in August 2004. The renovation plans were prepared by students of Imre Makovecz. The House of Citizens was inaugurated by Viktor Orbán on August 22, 2004. Since its opening, it has welcomed visitors as a community and cultural institution.
