Getting started as an adult or a child

Most stables offer beginner lessons, individually or in small groups, typically once a week. Early lessons teach handling the horse, tacking up, and basic seat. Indoor, covered arenas keep lessons going through winter too.

What to check

Ask about the instructor's qualifications, the number and training level of the horses, and whether a helmet and body protector are provided - strongly recommended for beginners. A good stable also looks after the horses' welfare and doesn't overwork the school horses.

Prices

A riding lesson around Budapest typically costs 6,000-12,000 Ft, cheaper with a package. Boarding your own horse runs in the tens of thousands of forints a month. Therapeutic and para-equestrian riding is run separately, by a trained specialist.
